There are many myths about having a vaginal birth after a caesarean (VBAC), and the risks and outcomes for the mother and baby are discussed negatively. But what if we saw birth as a positive experience empowering rather than something to be feared?
What if we looked at birth as a natural process that our bodies are designed to do? And what if we supported women in the lead-up to their birth with self-care practices that would nurture their mind, body and soul?
We know that the way we think about birth affects the outcome of our birth. So if we can shift our thinking around birth, and view it as a positive experience, then surely this will impact the outcome of our births.
And so, I invite you to consider self-care in the lead-up to your vaginal birth after caesarean birth. Have you thought about how you can nurture your mind-body?
Melinda has worked in the birth field for over a decade as a Calmbirth educator, birth doula, acupuncturist and Buteyko breath instructor; she has seen preparation’s impact.
Many people have opted to reeducate themselves and make the change required to have a different outcome than their previous birth. They view their VBAC as a new beginning, an opportunity to do things differently and create the birth they want.
The women I have worked with who have had a successful VBAC share common qualities. They:
- Educate themselves about the process of labour and birth (including understanding the physiology of how labour works and how their body is designed to give birth).
- Have realistic expectations (knowing that anything can happen on the day, but being open to any outcome).
- Choose care providers to support their choices and decisions around their birth.
- Spend time focusing on self-care during their birth (massage, acupuncture, visualisation).
