Jordan Harper is a registered midwife and Calmbirth educator in the Port Macquarie area. A beautiful place to call home she says!
“I found Calmbirth as a student midwife and felt drawn to it ever since. I became an educator because I am passionate about educating women and families about the magical, life changing experience of pregnancy and birth. Empowering women to be informed and involved in their childbirth experience brings me so much joy. I love seeing women realise how strong they are and I have seen how Calmbirth helps them to do that. I am also a huge supporter of getting partners involved in birth and that is one of my favourite aspects of the Calmbirth course.”
My Name is… Jordan
I work at… Port Macquarie Base Hospital.
My life in five words… sunny, calm, exciting, slow, challenging.
The best thing about where I live is… the abundance of beautiful beaches, bush walks and being a part of a small community where people care! Oh and the sublime peace and quiet. I grew up in this area, just outside of Port Macquarie and when I moved away at 18, I knew that I’d be back one day.
What I do to relax when I’m not working… I love to read, take my dog to the beach and spend time with loved ones. I also love mindful activities like puzzles and colouring and just being in nature whenever I can! But I also love a good afternoon of Netflix.
I can’t live without… my dog and the beach. And chocolate.
The person I most admire is…. Hmm there are many. My Nan is a very important person in my life and I admire her strength and love every day. I also have such admiration for every woman who gives birth to her baby in whichever way. I am constantly in awe of the female body and how it can grow a human, a placenta and then one day give birth to both! Then make milk to sustain the life of your baby. It is so incredible.
What I love most about being a Calmbirth Educator… Seeing the difference in couples from the beginning of class compared to the end. The confidence and excitement that they have begun to carry with them fills me with so much pride and I am so excited for their journey to becoming parents.
The 3 essential things you need to take with you into labour are… an open mind, your breath, a support person who is aware of your desires for your birth and ready to support and advocate for you.
My most memorable moment as a Calmbirth® educator… Receiving a beautiful card from my very first Calmbirth couple that made me feel so sure that I was on the right path in sharing this course with parents to be.
A favourite quote… “There is a secret in our society and it isn’t that birth is painful, but that women are strong” We so easily forget our strength or have simply never learnt to recognise it. We are strong!
If you had to describe how seeing a baby being born makes you feel… hopeful for all the possibilities of who this little human will become
