Alicia Ferguson has been a registered midwife in NZ for over 10 years, working mainly in South Auckland. She has worked both in the hospital, in primary birthing units, at homebirths, and as a LMC midwife in the community.

Working in the community meant that I was able to be a part of a woman’s pregnancy and birthing experience, often starting from week 6 of pregnancy, until their baby was 6 weeks old. 9 whole months! This meant that that I really got to understand the journey pregnant women and their families were on during this time – the excitement, the fears, the vulnerability, the overwhelm that can sometimes be a part of this transition into motherhood. I have come to realise the huge importance of good education and knowledge and I became really passionate about providing women and their support people with this. And the best part is being able to do this in a way that empowers, strengthens and excites them!

Becoming a Calmbirth Educator has been an amazing way to provide even more education and support to women and their families during this special time. Spending a whole weekend delving into all the preparation for labour and birth and seeing so many “a-ha!” moments for the people attending is such a privilege and something I absolutely love doing. I have been a part of well over 500 births now and am still always learning something new and love sharing that with others. I am so excited to be bringing this course to even more women in Aotearoa, and see the amazing effects it has. Please feel free to contact me for more info about the Calmbirth course to help you decide if it’s going to be the right fit for you.

My Name is… Alicia Ferguson.

I currently work …as a midwife in South Auckland, New Zealand.

My life in five words…adventure, nature, midwifery, family and friends.

The best thing about where I live is…that I am surrounded by people of so many different cultures and ethnicities.

What I do to relax when I’m not working…getting outdoors, going for walks and doing yoga.

I can’t live without… music.

The person I admire most…is my partner who is always encouraging me to aim high and not worry about what other people think.

What I love most about being a Calmbirth Educator…is being able to see the lightbulb moments for people when they realize their power and are amazed at how much the human body is capable of.

The 3 essential things you need to take with you into labour are….awareness of your breath, an amazing support person, and some good snacks and drinks!

My most memorable moment as a Calmbirth educator has been… getting my first feedback forms and realising that everyone has loved it as much as I do!

A favourite quote …“Now and again it’s good to pause in our pursuit of happiness and just be happy.” Guillaume Apollinaire

If you had to describe how seeing a baby being born makes you feel … it’s that I’m the luckiest person in the world to be able to witness this new person coming into the world and seeing the parents fall in love with them.
