Getting to know Calmbirth Educator Gwen Teasdale

Gwen began training as a doula after the birth of her first child in 2002, as she found herself wanting to be a part of the ‘birth world’. Since that time, she has been regularly supporting women and their partners during their pregnancy, labour and childbirth, as well as in post-natal areas such as breastfeeding.

Through my experiences as a birthing woman and as a doula, I believe that it is a woman’s emotional experience during childbirth that will come to define her birthing experience in time. Having worked with people utilising a wide range of birth preparation techniques, I became more and more interested in Calmbirth®, as the couples I worked with who were using Calmbirth® methods were really well prepared for their labour, were confident, and had a great understanding of how their body worked during labour. They drew on their own resources using relaxation and breathing techniques and visualisations. I consistently saw great results – the couples that utilised the simple Calmbirth® methods had the skills to create a wonderful birth experience even if their labour took an unexpected turn. I feel strongly that Australian Calmbirth® is an organisation with great integrity. I am proud to be associated with it as I feel passionate about empowering couples with research-based information and strategies so that they can create their own wonderful birth experience.

The births of my children were life-changing experiences for me. Whilst they were quite different (one an emergency caesarean, the other a vaginal birth), both were profoundly enlightening experiences.

My name is…Gwen Teasdale.

I work at…Hunterdoula.

What I love most about being a Calmbirth Educator…I love seeing transformations in couples over a Calmbirth weekend- especially if they are initially fearful about birth, I love watching them walk out the door at the end of the weekend looking confident and excited about their birth.

My life in five words…Happy wife, mother, doula, nurse.

What I love most about where I live…I love that Maitland is a beautiful old historic town, with gorgeous rural surrounds, but a stones throw from the vineyards and the beach.

The three essential things you need to take with you into labour are…Trust, love, and a good support team (all essential to get oxytocin flowing!)

What I do to relax when I’m not working is…Spending time with family, cooking, running.

If I had to describe my own birth experience in three words I would describe as…Life changing experiences!

My Most memorable moment as a Calmbirth Educator is…having a Dad turn up at my front door to tell me the news that his baby had been born. It was a moment of pure joy.

I can’t live without…Chocolate.

The person I admire most is…Marge Simpson. She has a lot to deal with Homer and Bart, yet she always has a sunny optimism. She responds to her children in a very selfless way, encouraging them without putting pressure on them. She is not perfect, but she is good, kind, empathetic and fun. She tries new things- she has been a cop, a novelist, a prisoner and a painting teacher in prison, a Power Plant employee, an erotic baker, a real estate agent, and a trade show model. And she has great hair.

The best advice I ever got in my life was…It is what it is.
