Getting to know Calmbirth Educator Martyna Ccooper

Educators

Her passion to become a Calmbirth® educator was driven by both her professional and personal experiences. She is a registered nurse, midwife and ‘mother’ to two beautiful girls. Martyna’s first encounter with Calmbirth® was as a student midwife, looking after couples who had attended the classes in preparation for the birth of their baby. She was truly inspired and witnessed the amazing ability of women to calmly birth their babies and have empowering birth experiences. Martyna learnt to trust birth, to trust in a woman’s body and learnt that knowledge gave couples the confidence to release fears and birth instinctively. Pregnant with her first child, she wanted that confidence so her and her husband attended the Calmbirth® program in preparation for what was going to be one of the most important experiences of their lives.

“I’m proud to say we had the birth we wanted. We laboured together, just the two of us, for the majority of my labour, and we welcomed our little girl in the gentlest way with a water birth at home. It was honestly magical. I have never felt more womanly and more empowered than the day our first born entered this world. Reflecting on my own experience motivated me down the path of becoming a Calmbirth® educator. I needed to ‘spread the word’. I wanted to make a difference to other’s experiences, because working as a midwife in a birth suite, potentially meeting a couple for the first time as they enter their birth room, there’s only so much I can do. I believe in a woman’s ability to birth, and I want to protect that. I want to teach the skills that will enable couples to feel empowered as they welcome their baby in whatever path their birth takes.”

Martyna teaches private weekday evening classes in the comfort of her own home, or small group weekend classes based in Aspendale.

My name is…Martyna Cooper

I work at…Hey Baby! and Sandringham Hospital.

What I love most about being a Calmbirth Educator…Educating couples that care about their birth experience and providing them with knowledge and skills to have empowering experiences.

My life in five words…Sleep-deprived haze of love and toddler craziness.

What I love most about where I live…The smell of the sea breeze.

The three essential things you need to take with you into labour are…Preparation of mind, body and soul, the belief that “you’ve got this” and a support team that trusts birth.

What I do to relax when I’m not working is…Spend time with my beautiful family. “Me time” involves netball, running and baths.

If I had to describe my own birth experience in three words I would describe as…Beautiful, empowering and intimate.

My Most memorable moment as a Calmbirth Educator is…When I received a phone call from a client who had planned a home birth, and she said to me “Marty, we were so calm, our midwife didn’t arrive until our baby’s head was crowning”. She sounded like she was radiating oxytocin as she recalled her birth experience to me. It was wonderful to hear.

I can’t live without…My family.

The person I admire most is…My kids. For challenging me, for pushing me, for making me do some serious soul searching, for teaching me patience like I’ve never known and expanding my ability to love like I never knew existed.

The best advice I ever got in my life was…“This too shall pass”
