Getting to know Calmbirth Educator Tracey Anderson Askew


Tracey Anderson Askew has many qualifications such as: A Diploma of Teaching; Bachelor of Education; Graduate Diploma of Childbirth Education; Calmbirth® Educator; and Doula. However, her most important and cherished qualification, is being a mother of four sons. She brought Calmbirth to the ACT, and surrounding areas over eleven years ago, and has worked with over 1500 couples preparing them for birth and parenting.

I still feel very inspired by this important work, in that it changes labours, and changes the experiences people have as they become parents for the first time. The most common feedback I get from couples after experiencing the program is, ‘ah this makes perfect sense, everyone should know this!’ It is real, it is practical and most importantly it is possible in whatever context or circumstance people find themselves in when they are birthing. I have been amazed at the stories that have come to pass since, and feel very proud to be still offering this program to pregnant women and their partners in my local area.

My name is…Tracey Anderson Askew.

I work at…I’m the Director of the Better Breathing Centre in Canberra, I’m a Calmbirth Educator and Founder of Calm Parenting in Canberra.

What I love most about being a Calmbirth Educator…Results, results and results. I’m in a rare and privileged position to see my families after the birth through our centre for calm parenting and get to see how they have been able to use the tools not just in birth but parenting as well.

My life in five words…Rich, full, meaningful, challenging and unpredictable.

What I love most about where I live…Canberra is Australia’s best kept secret. It’s got all the benefits of a city and yet it is like a country town. I live 30 minutes from the CBD on 17 acres. Not too many cities you can have the best of both worlds.

The three essential things you need to take with you into labour are…Food, Confidence and A smile.

What I do to relax when I’m not working is…Meditation is my life line, without it, I’m sure I’d be more loopy 😊!

If I had to describe my own birth experience in three words I would describe as… Life changing – I had no idea I had that kind of power. Life awakening – it woke me up to seeing the world and myself in a very different way. Life loving – I discovered in a more tangible way, what it is to love, and not just my baby.

My Most memorable moment as a Calmbirth Educator is…having bagpipe practice start up during a relaxation, in the room next door, hilarious.

I can’t live without…the next breath – haa haa!

The person I admire most is… my husband, he’s committed to our family, he’s open to learning and living and being the best man he can be.

The best advice I ever got in my life was… failure is the mother to success, it made me more brave.
