Prior to becoming a Calmbirth Educator much of my midwifery practise and childbirth education approach was on mindfulness based labour, birth and parenting. After close observation and gracious learning from the women I have cared for over the years as a midwife, I observed that pregnancy, childbirth and early parenting can be remarkably transformative when utilizing the life-skill of mindfulness. Being present in the now to a growing baby whilst cocooned in a tummy has many benefits to both mother and baby, as does parenting mindfully from the moment of birth. It was clear to me that women found tremendous benefits by being in the present moment, enabling them to live through their ordinary and extraordinary life transition with greater confidence, wisdom, belief and joy.
By natural extension becoming a Calmbirth educator felt right for me. The Calmbirth modality of childbirth and parenting preparation enables me to merge what I’ve learned and witnessed anecdotally with a solid framework that is supported by science in the study of mind/body connection. Quite simply, when the mind is calm and peaceful, the body has no choice but to follow. What a powerful concept for a labouring woman and her partner to master. Calmbirth practice is not only a way of approaching pregnancy and birthing but a lifelong resource for parenting and living with greater kindness, confidence, calmness and self care thereafter.
