Preparing for birth – and breastfeeding

Preparing for birth… but have you thought about preparing for breastfeeding, too?

When you’re pregnant, there’s so much to think about and prepare for. You might be spending time learning about birth (especially with our wonderful Calmbirth courses),  practising your calm breathing, thinking about your birth preferences and imagining what it will be like to finally meet your baby.

But one thing I really encourage families to think about is what happens after their baby arrives.

Because birth is just the beginning.

Breastfeeding is something we don’t always talk about or prepare for as much as we could. We often hear that it’s natural, and while it absolutely is, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s always easy.

You and your baby are learning together. You’re getting to know each other, recovering from birth, navigating those early days with very little sleep, and learning how to feed your baby along the way. It can be beautiful, but it can also feel overwhelming at times.

And I think having some understanding of what to expect before your baby arrives can make such a difference.

Knowing about those first feeds, understanding your baby’s feeding cues, learning how milk supply works and knowing what to look for when your baby is feeding well can help you feel more confident as you find your way.

It also means you may feel more comfortable reaching out for help if things aren’t going as you expected.

Something else I encourage families to think about is the support they’ll have once they’re home with their baby.

Who will be there to help you? Who can bring you a meal, help with the housework or make sure you’ve had something to eat and drink? Who can you call when you’re feeling tired, emotional or unsure about something?

Because those early days aren’t just about caring for your baby. They’re about caring for you, too. You’re recovering, adjusting and finding your feet as a new family.

You don’t need to have everything worked out before your baby arrives. But taking some time to prepare for breastfeeding and the postpartum period, just as you prepare for birth, can help you feel more informed, supported and ready for the journey ahead.

And please remember, asking for help isn’t a sign that you’re not coping. Sometimes, having the right person beside you, offering reassurance and practical support, is exactly what you need.

As part of preparing for birth, let’s also make space to talk about breastfeeding, recovery and those early days at home. Because you deserve to feel supported through all of it, not just the birth itself.
