Hello, I’m Louise Chatelier—a Registered Midwife with over 25 years of experience and an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC).
It is no secret that women are strong, resilient, and have everything they need within themselves to birth their babies. My aim is to empower you with the knowledge and confidence to work with your mind and body, helping you trust your instincts and embrace your unique journey through pregnancy, birth, and beyond.
With a sense of adventure and a desire to care for others, my nursing career began. Travelling interstate and overseas as a young nurse shaped me professionally and personally, building lifelong friendships and lasting memories.
As a midwife I worked at Monash Medical Centre in Clayton, caring for women with high-risk pregnancies. These early years made me realise how important it was for women to feel safe, supported and respected in order to follow their body’s own rhythm and intuition in their birth space. It was in those moments, amidst the intensity and beauty of birth, that I truly understood what it means to be ‘with woman’ to listen without judgement, to hold space with compassion and to walk alongside families with a reassuring presence.
Facilitating and co-ordinating childbirth education at Eastern Health for many years, I now feel blessed to visit and support parents when they are discharged home with their newborn baby. Additionally, as a Lactation Consultant it is a privilege to observe a woman grow in confidence as she steps into motherhood and to witness the gentle dance of breastfeeding unfold.
Birth is the beginning of a profound, sometimes challenging, parenting journey.
As a Calmbirth Educator, it’s incredibly rewarding to witness the powerful transformation which occurs as couples begin to trust themselves and deepen their understanding. It’s a gentle reminder of the quiet truth: ‘with knowledge comes confidence’.
From this place of calm and connection let me walk this journey with you.
My Name is…Louise Chatelier.
I work…as midwife at the Angliss hospital in Ferntree Gully visiting couples at home when they are discharged with their beautiful baby. I am also a Lactation Consultant and love watching women grow in confidence as they begin their breastfeeding journey.
My life in five words…fulfilling, family, kindness, love, compassion.
The best thing about where I live is…waking to the view of the hills from my bedroom window, the autumn leaves and smell of the fresh air, the feel of a close knit community of Ferntree Gully, my village.
What I do to relax when I’m not working…long walks on the beach with the wind in my hair and Airpods playing my favourite music, the 1000 steps and breathing in nature, a good cocktail and catch ups with friends, cruising in my XD, baking a carrot cake or making sushi.
I can’t live without…my family, friends, and CHOCOLATE!
The person or traits I most admire is…my parents. I never realised how difficult yet rewarding parenting was, until I became a parent myself. Labour and birth is one really momentous day of your life, parenting is a journey, made easier with love, commitment, faith, communication and perseverance
What I love most about being a Calmbirth Educator…Empowering women and couples to realise that they have everything within them to birth their baby. It’s so true that ‘With knowledge comes confidence’
If I had to describe my own birth experiences in 3 words...surrendering, transcendent, empowering
The 3 essential things you need to take with you into labour are…confidence: in yourself and your body, a positive attitude, your advocate and support person.
My most memorable moment as Calmbirth® educator…bumping into families who I have cared for in the past and seeing how far they have come in their journey of parenthood.
A favourite quote…“The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or touched – they must be felt with the heart” Helen Keller
If you had to describe how seeing a baby being born makes you feel…overcome with emotion and awe, as each birth is such a miracle, each baby perfection.
