Tips for staying active in labour

We’ve all heard that staying active in labour is the golden standard for encouraging natural progression of labour and birth. But what does that actually mean? Here are some simple tips for how to stay active in labour & let your body lead the way!

1. Walk, sway, or rock during early labour
2. Use gravity — upright positions help baby move down
3. Try hands-and-knees position to ease back pain
4. Use a birth or exercise ball for gentle bouncing or hip circles
5. Lean over a bed or support person for support during contractions
6. Rest when needed — side-lying is great for this too!

Movement and positioning during labour aren’t just about comfort — they can help labour progress, reduce pain, and support baby’s optimal positioning.

Listen to your body. Every movement has a purpose — even just shifting your hips can create more space for baby. Your body knows what to do. Trust it. Move with it!
