Getting To Know Calmbirth Educator Queenie Kelly

Educators

Hi, I’m Queenie!

I’m a Registered Nurse, Midwife, Calmbirth Educator, and soon-to-be mum, based in Newcastle, NSW. With years of experience working across all areas of maternity care at John Hunter Hospital—including Birth Suite, Antenatal and Postnatal Wards, the Maternity Assessment Day Unit (MADU), and home visits—I’ve had the privilege of supporting countless families through pregnancy, birth, and early parenthood.

I am deeply passionate about antenatal education and believe that birth is a transformative experience—one that should be approached with calm, confidence, and connection. My goal is to empower you with knowledge, practical tools, and mindset shifts that will help you feel prepared and positive about your birth, no matter the path it takes.

As a Calmbirth educator, I provide evidence-based education, teaching relaxation, breathing, visualisation, and mindfulness techniques to help you and your birth partner replace fear with trust—in your body, your baby, and the birth process. I love teaching Calmbirth because it aligns with my core belief: that birth is a natural, physiological process, and that you already hold the wisdom and ability to birth your baby.

My Name is...Queenie Kelly.

I work at…The John Hunter Hospital as a Registered Midwife and Nurse.

The five words that describe my life would be...Sunshine, connection, nurturing, mindful, wholesome.

The best thing about where I live…The sense of community, the ocean and my beautiful friends and family.

When I’m not working and have some spare time I love..Dinner parties, going to the farmers market, swimming in the ocean, being outdoors.

I can’t live without...Quality sleep haha.

The trait I admire most in others is…People who show kindness and have an open heart—especially parents navigating their journey into birth and parenthood.

What I love most about being a Calmbirth educator is...Helping parents feel confident and prepared for birth by giving them the knowledge, mindset, and tools to embrace the experience with calm and trust.

Three essential things you need to take in to labour are...

  1. A sense of trust in your body and the birth process
  2. A supportive birth partner and/or team
  3. Tools for relaxation—breathwork, movement, and a calm mindset

The most memorable moment I’ve had as an educator...Hearing from couples after their births, knowing that Calmbirth helped them feel empowered and at peace with their own unique experience.

A favourite quote…“We have a secret in our culture, it’s not that birth is painful. It’s that women are strong” – Laure Stavoe Harm

How does seeing a baby being born make me feel...It’s an awe-inspiring, humbling, and deeply emotional moment every time.
