Birth Stories

Ally & Hamish’s story (from Hamish)

We welcomed our little Mariella into the world. Slowly but surely.

Unfortunately, Ally had been showing some signs of Pre-eclampsia, most worrying being her blood pressure, so we needed an induction for mums’ sake at 39.2 weeks.

Fortunately, though, mum was already far enough along, all she needed was to have her waters broken and we were off!

Ally was a different beast. I can’t begin to tell you how incredible she was. She was just in a different zone taking contraction after contraction and not letting anything distract her from climbing that next mountain. She was just incredible. However, after many positions, (wet and dry) and 12 hours, her body had given all it had to give, dilating at 4cm she agreed that an epidural was what mum needed.

Everything we took from Calmbirth (even my cheat sheet) were on full display, and whilst I now know Ally is literally strong enough to do anything, I know they played a massive role in getting through such a prolonged labour.

The epidural ended up being an absolute godsend for us, as it allowed Ally to get a fraction of rest in while contractions continued. Ally got about 4 hours sleep and when she woke up, her body had been hard at work, and she was now 10cm and ready to push.

28 hours after kicking off, our little girl was here weighing 3.5kg and 52cm long.

Yes absolutely use anything you’d like.

I can’t stress enough how important the Calmbirth course was for us, but it really showed its head when Ally knew she needed the epidural. It wasn’t in our plan, and once she conceded that, she started talking about C sections (which you can imagine as a midwife was the last thing she wanted) but talking as if it was inevitable.

But once we got her mind back on track that this was just a roadblock with many other avenues, you could see her find a second wind, and from there on, it was a textbook birth.
