For many, this is the most exciting time of your life

The thought of giving birth is daunting for some women and their partners, but a service in the Southern highlands can conquer those fears and make the process a much less stressful one.

Calming Influences

My first birth was an arduous labour with a decent amount of intervention. I wanted more skills and options up my sleeve to help me.

Calmbirth – Empowering couples through knowledge and confidence

Birth. It happens to all of us. Well, happened. And, as for birth-ing, there’s a higher than average chance that if you are reading this, you’ve either given somebody else the gift of life or are considering the possibility of doing just that. For those of you in neither category, but along for the ride, welcome! In fact, thank you for taking the time! Because, as you’ll come to see, partners and supporters can make the world of difference to an expecting mum and to her birthing experience.

Preventing food allergy in your baby

We now know that the best way to prevent allergies in our children is to give them the common allergy causing foods before they turn one. Delaying the introduction of the common allergy causing foods does not prevent food allergy.

How coronavirus is changing maternity wards

Pregnancy is usually a time of joy and nerves but the anxiety is only rising as the coronavirus continues to spread.Calm Birth owner Karen McClay tells Deborah Knight that the coronavirus is having a major impact on pregnant women. “There’s maternity units that are having to consider cutting down visitors and limiting who can actually go onto units as well, so there’s concern about what support people they can take with them.”She says they have tried to adjust to the new normal by moving programs online and using telehealth appointments.

Even during a pandemic babies WILL be born & Calmbirth will be there to help support, empower & educate pregnant couples in a virtual classroom

Due to the current threat of the Coronavirus and the increased risk of cross infection between class participants, all major maternity hospitals in Sydney have suspended face to face antenatal education classes.
It is anticipated that hospitals in other states will soon apply the same restrictions and private practitioners may also need to adopt the same boundaries. As a result of this pandemic, Calmbirth has come up with an innovative solution that enables pregnant couples, whose anxiety levels maybe peaking with all the uncertainties to still be able to access quality and evidence based childbirth education in a virtual classroom via ZOOM, where the couples can engage with other pregnant couples, their Calmbirth Educator as well as calm their fears about giving birth.

Possums for parents with babies

Calmbirth is working together with the Possums Clinic to provide families with the latest and evidence based information, services and support they need once they bring their babies home. Now more than ever before where anxiety, stress and fear levels are heightened and the support of families, friends and their village is gone, due to isolation during these very uncertain times, Calmbirth feels that the services the Possum Clinic provides new parents ranging from breastfeeding, infant sleep, unsettled behaviour, maternal mood, infant mental health and so much more is the security and confidence that is needed right now for parents to make their transition into parenthood as calmly and as empowered as they can.

The Simplicity of Lemon and Water

It is a great time to cleanse ensuring you are helping your body with environmental factors and stress.  When in the clinic working as a Dr Chinese medicine, I speak often about the role of the Liver in being the Commander of the body and organs.  When the Commander is unhappy everyone is unhappy, so it is important always to soothe the Liver, calming the body.  The role of the Liver is to remove toxins, performing this essential metabolic function. So cleansing the Liver to start your day, ensures the body is running correctly, enabling you to have more energy.  As the Livers role within the body is to support the muscles by supplying them with blood, when you are sleeping the blood returns to the Liver to be cleansed, again lemon and hot water are your go-to here.

CALMBIRTH TO RESUME TEACHING FACE TO FACE IN JANUARY 2022

As you are all aware, from October 11th there will be some restrictions eased in NSW and possibly Victoria, in lockdown affected areas. Calmbirth as an organisation has thought long and hard about how we safely navigate our way back to face to face teaching in what will still be a very unpredictable Covid environment with the potential for increases in Covid infections and subsequent snap lockdowns predicted as the States reopen. The next few months will be an important time to watch and see what happens as we transition to post lockdown life.
