Then, at the start gate, I saw some of them talking to themselves, likely giving a final burst of motivation or mentally preparing just before the gates opened.
Visualization is powerful whether you’re preparing for the finish line or the birth room.
In elite sport, athletes mentally rehearse their performance before they ever step onto the field. This isn’t just positive thinking it activates neural pathways in the brain almost as if the movement is actually happening.
Now think about birth.
When a woman visualizes her birth, breathing through waves, softening her body, seeing her baby descending, imagining the first cry, she is also training her nervous system. The brain doesn’t fully distinguish between vividly imagined and real experiences. So, when labour begins, the body recognizes the pattern. It feels familiar, not threatening.
In both sport and birth, visualization:
- Builds confidence
- Reduces fear
- Strengthens mind-body connection
- Improves focus under pressure
- Creates a sense of control in intense moments
Athletes visualize the podium.
Birthing women can visualize holding their baby.
Both require endurance.
Both require surrender and strength.
Both are profound physical events guided by the mind.
The body follows where the mind has already been.
