Just wanted to share the news that our darling girl, Charlotte Winter arrived in the early hours 12.2.26, three days after her ETA. She was due on 9.2 and when we saw our OB on the 4.2 he did an internal check and advised that she was engaged and my cervix was soft so she was likely to arrive ahead of her due date so be on standby.
Well, the due date came and went and we were wondering where our baby was we saw our OB on 11.2 for a check up and he did a membrane sweep to help bring on spontaneous labour. We got back to the highlands at 5pm and that evening I felt early labour signs kick in. At about 8:30pm with contractions getting closer together I told Jarryd to call the hospital and they told us to come straight in so back to Sydney we went. I was 2cm dilated when we arrived. We settled in to get comfortable knowing we had a big night ahead of us!
Early labour progressed fairly quickly. Breath work and the tens machine helped but around 11:30pm I had a morphine injection which helped to take the edge off and allowed me to get some rest. Around 1am my water broke and holy moly the contractions ramped up to a whole other level. I was in established labour for about an hour. Jarryd and our midwife were amazing at helping me through that stage which was incredibly difficult. Our OB hadn’t come in to see us yet as he was tied up with a 32 week emergency caesarean which was a little stressful hoping he’d make it in time, but I had no concept of time or how far along I was at that point.
About 2am it was time to push. Our midwife was incredibly kind and calming and despite the pain I felt at ease and in good hands, our OB arrived about 2:30am and the two of them, with Jarryd holding my hand guided me through and at 3:43am our girl was born she weighed 3.54kg and was 54cm long. She’s doing great and we’re enjoying being home in our own space and finding our feet as first time parents.
My message to others would be that Classes like Calmbirth are so beneficial to understand what’s happening during labour and birth and make informed decisions throughout that feel right for you. I felt calm and empowered throughout and supported throughout the whole journey.
