We just wanted to let you know that we’ve had our 2nd Calmbirth baby. So, calm that he was accidentally born at home.
He was born at 10.45am on Wednesday 04/06/25 in our bedroom.
Early labour started in the afternoon on Tuesday and continued overnight. I was able to labour in bed and sleep in between contractions, squeezing Tom’s arm as each surge came. I got out of bed at 6am and carried on as usual, preparing breakfast for my 1.5 year old Bonnie. I imagined labour to last all day/night ahead, so I distracted myself by playing with Bonnie (lots of oxytocin). We put her down for her nap at 9am and instantly my contractions increased in intensity and frequency.
We buckled down in the bedroom where I used the shower, birth ball, pressure comb and got out the clary sage to smell. Tom pushed on my pressure points and helped me read out my affirmation cards. He again reminded me to breathe deep and low sounds like we learnt in Calmbirth. I couldn’t believe how intense it was feeling so soon, and I remember my headspace shifting to “I don’t think I can do this again” (imagining this intensity to continue all day/night ahead). Now that I look back, I realise this was transition! My affirmations were such an anchor at this point.
I breathed through each surge and surrendered to the process. Even though our plan had changed, I felt so calm and safe with Tom’s support. The paramedics arrived while I was pushing and stood back to let Tom deliver our son.
I knew that the baby’s head was about to be born as I noticed my contractions starting to be spaced further apart. I used this time to gather my breath and focus on each push. I felt really in control and connected to my body and baby. I remember hearing a paramedic say, “if the head doesn’t come in the next 2 contractions, we’ll have to take her to the hospital”. The midwife over the phone kindly dismissed this and encouraged me to change positions by elevating one leg to open up my hips (I was in a standing position leaning over the bed).
I ignored the paramedics comment as I was in the zone, and I knew baby was coming and that I could do this! I elevated one leg and our boy’s head started to crown in the next contraction. This part felt so familiar to me, and I breathed my way through each push with Tom’s incredible support. Our son was born at 10.45am into his dad’s arms, healthy and safe.
